| Bio: | Shousetsu Bang*Bang is a webzine for original boy's love oneshot stories, intended as an online, English-language text equivalent of one of those All Yomikiri Bimonthly Summer Special 100 Extra Pages!! manga phonebooks where every story is about the torrid romance of an ordinary schoolboy and his soccer club captain - or a teenaged yakuza boss and his faithful lieutenant - or the prince of an exotic desert country and the emerald-eyed winged bishounen he rescues from the sawtoothed sand monsters of G'or, self-contained in 30 pages and heartwarmingly predictable. Our editorial policy is to dispense with meaning and literary merit and concentrate on cracked-out inconsequential fun. Please read the rules and guidelines below first. *** Current Issue (vol.4 no.14) The fourteenth issue appeared on March 6. The theme for this issue was SHORT AND SWEET (stories between 500 and 4,500 words). *** Next Issue (vol.4 no.15) The fifteenth issue will appear on June 21. The theme for this issue is POP! GOES MY HEART (stories about music). The submission deadline for the fifteenth issue is June 7. Stories submitted on or before the 7th will appear in the fifteenth issue; stories submitted after the 7th will appear in the sixteenth issue (slated for August). *** Submission Rules and Guidelines 1) Original fiction only. If you're hung up on characters that don't belong to you, change their names and details, AU them, and the Editor will be happy to think of you as one of those people who always draw their seme to look like Youko Kurama. (No borrowing of text or recognizable plot points, though, because then it gets iffy. If in the slightest bit of doubt, email the Editor and ask.) 2) The story must be "first published" in Bang*Bang, i.e. must not have appeared anywhere else (online or offline) beforehand. We do not wish you to submit your old work; we wish you to suffer the deadlines properly. However, once the issue of B*B containing your story is on the stands, you're free to do whatever you like with it, including posting/submitting it to other zines and communities. 3) A story must be at least 1500 words long and contain one sex scene (soft R or above). This is because a properly descriptive sex scene needs about 1500 words in the first place. Sex-scene-less stories that are nevertheless works of coked-out yaoi genius will be accepted at the discretion of the Editor, but let's not be wusses here, c'mon. While there is no ideological upper bound on number of words or sex scenes, if it needs more than one chapter, chances are it's not a short story. So the practical upper bound is the character limit of a single LJ entry, i.e. about 11000 words. (Clarifications on rules #1-3 - UPDATED MARCH 2008. Please read!) 4) It is strongly suggested that your story have a beginning, a middle and a happi endo, or at least not finish on a note of nihilistic death and destruction. This is to preserve the "BL yomikiri" feel: in the Editor's experience, 95% of oneshots end with a kiss and a presumed happily ever after. 5) Shota is okay. BDSM is okay. Furry mpreg is okay. Non-con orgies with elves are okay. In other words, it's all okay. (To avoid unpleasant surprises, a warning will be placed before stories containing elves.) 6) Bad spelling and grammar are not okay. The Editor is both very anal and very lazy, so if you submit text that will require her to pick through with corrections before it attains legibility, she will submit it forthwith to the circular bin. (Clarifications on rule #6, including a writing aid link list - again, please read.) 7) Here are the nitpicky guidelines regarding how to format your story before sending it in, what to call the file, and where to send it. Following the guidelines saves the Editor both time and sanity, and thus counts as a Nice Thing To Do. 8) Issues will be posted publicly. If the thought of putting your (lj)name to a story resembling the last retarded yet really hawt scanlation you read in which a high school student who is actually a pop idol millionaire in disguise kidnaps his math teacher and keeps him as a sex slave in the broom closet or something inhibits you with deep shame, you have the option of submitting anonymously, as long as you make up a fake Japanese mangaka pseudonym to be emblazoned on the bimonthly cover image. In fact, even if you're not hiding under cover of anonymity, fake Japanese mangaka pseudonyms are strongly encouraged. Style points are awarded for obscure kanji and awful puns. 9) Pretty pictures are also encouraged, whether you illustrate your own story or team up with an artist of your acquaintance (or, if you're an artist, find a writer to ambush from the sign-up post). Guidelines for illustrations are also here. To volunteer for the cover art/story, contact the editor for details. Note that as the fiction is original, the art must also be original. 10) Write! Read!
